I thought of current-day versions for nearly all these jobs in the industrializing world. Children and destitute families in the Western dumping grounds in Africa, India, swathes of Asia. Picking through piles of electronics, garbage for something worth anything. Manual waste collectors, street sweepers, the unseen and unheard - still exposed to inhumanity, 150 years on in large parts of the world. The continued reality of Dependency Theory's latest frontiers and global caste-system.
